Save a course after the trial expires

Q: Will my Storyline / Rise / Captivate / Vyond / Camtasia asset be available after the trial expires?

A: That depends on the tool.  In all cases, there are ways to ensure that it is available.

  • Storyline: Storyline files are stored on your local computer.  When your trial expires you will still have the project - it can be opened later when you purchase Storyline or when you start a new trial.  If you publish a Storyline project to Review360, access to that will be lost when your trial expires.  If you publish the course as HTML5 (publish for the web) and host it in your portfolio it will still be there when your trial expires.

  • Rise:  Rise projects are stored in your Rise account in the Articulate cloud.  When your trial expires you lose access to the project.  You can restore access by purchasing Rise for that specific account.  Since the project is stored in a specific account you cannot access it from another account - either a new trial account or a different purchased account.  If you publish the Rise project to Review360, access to that project is lost when the trial expires.  If you publish the course and host it in your portfolio it will still be there when your trial expires.

Instructions for publishing Rise projects to your portfolio

  • Vyond: Vyond projects are like Rise - the are stored online in your Vyond account.  When the trial expires the only way to gain access again is to purchase Vyond for that specific account.  Vyond is easy to save - simply download the video and add it to your portfolio.  Of course, during the trail videos have the Vyond watermark.  This is fine for your portfolio - it still shows your skills and everyone knows that the watermark is removed by sending money.

NOTE: The Vyond website says that projects in your trial account are kept for 18 months.  There is a typo on the page so it is unclear if that is "at least 18 months" or if it is "up to 18 months".

  • Camtasia: Camtasia projects are like Storyline, they are stored on your local computer so you still have them after the trial.  They can be opened later when you purchase Camtasia or when you start another trial. Camtasia videos created during the trial contain a watermark - again, this is okay for your portfolio.
  • Captivate: Captivate projects are also stored locally on your computer so they will be available later when you purchase Captivate or start a new trial.  Projects that are published via the "Publish for Devices" during the trial are available after the trial.  They can be loaded to your portfolio using the same technique as Storyline and Rise.  For projects published "to Adobe Connect" or "to Adobe Captivate Prime", access is lost after the trial and can only be regained by purchasing Captivate for that specific account.

Adapt the Storyline instructions to publish Captivate courses

Q: I see that the Academy recommends saving [elearning projects] to your hard drive, but I'm not sure how.

A: Instructions for saving Storyline and Rise projects are in the video and text of this lesson:  Publish Storyline projects to your Website.

Instructions for Adobe Captivate are similar - Choose "Publish for Devices", choose "zip file".  The output will be saved to your local computer, which can be used in your portfolio by uploading to Google Cloud, AWS or Netlify using the same instructions: Publish Storyline projects to your Website.
